[Men in Imperial Russian Army uniforms] [An iconographic document]
Date issued/created: Description:The photo pictures seven young men posing for the photo in two rows. In the first row four of them are sitting cross-legged and the three in the second row are standing at attention. The second man from the right in the first row is wearing a uniform of an elder rank-and-file soldier and a hat. The rest are dressed in dark-coloured/black uniforms and double-breasted jackets. The photo was taken in a photographer’s workshop. It is currently in very bad condition ; According to the description attached to the photograph, it was taken in an unknown photographer’s workshop in 1927. It shows the donor’s grandfather, Mateusz (...) (born 1897), who lived in the village of Depułtycze Królewskie (near Chełm Lubelski). It is a group photo- a keepsake from the time of his service in the tsar’s army (the grandfather is the one in the middle). [The description is wrong at least as to the date. If he did serve in the tsar’s army, it could not have been after 1918] ; The photo sent to the contest named “Photography of the Polish village pre-1948” organized in 1983 by the quarterly “Fotografia” (Photography) and the weekly “Nowa Wieś” (New village). Copy of the photo kept at the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnology of the Polish Academy of Sciences (former Institute for the History of Material Culture)
