Description:

The photo shows a group of several dozen wedding guest and a young couple posing for the photo against a background of a big house with greetings for the couple inscribed above the doorway. In the middle of the first row a woman in a white dress and a veil is sitting, clutching a bouquet in her hand and next to her a man in a suit with a bow in its lapel. There are a few children among the guests. The youngest of them, about two years of age, is sitting on the laps of a woman on the left side of the photo. Another four are sitting on a blanket in front of the young couple. On the right you can see musicians with an accordion and violins. The wedding took place in the village of Chwarzenko in the Stare Kiszewa gmina, Gdańsk Voivodeship. The young couple were Barbara and Józef (...). Amongst the guests there were people by the names of: (...), (...), (...), (...), (...). From the people pictured on the photo 28 are dead and most of them died during the occupation ; According to the owner of the photo, it was taken on Tuesday, July 5th 1938 (the Kashubian custom was for weddings to take place in the middle of the week). It was taken by his uncle, who was a photographer in Kościerzyn (Gdańsk Voivodeship) ; July the 5th, 1938, village Chwarzenko, Stara Kiszewa commune, gdańskie voivodeship ; The photo sent to the contest named “Photography of the Polish village pre-1948” organized in 1983 by the quarterly “Fotografia” (Photography) and the weekly “Nowa Wieś” (New village). Copy of the photo kept at the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnology of the Polish Academy of Sciences (former Institute for the History of Material Culture)
