Abstrakt:

The purpose of the article is to present the records of the offices of letters of central party and state institutions as a source of research into the reality of the Polish People’s Republic. The research is based on those letters and their fragments as well as on the subject and statistic surveys prepared on their basis. The author intends to demonstrate the possibilities of research into the preserved documentation as a source of information about the everyday life of the Poles in analysed period.The article is divided into four parts. The first one presents the genesis of offices of letters at central party and state institutions. It contains also a characteristic of those addressees of the correspondence who in the eyes of public opinion enjoyed high trust of the society. In the next part a scale of the phenomenon is demonstrated, in the form of a table presenting letters of citizens. The third section discusses the authors of the letters and signalises the most frequent problems mentioned in the correspondence. In the last part the author characterises the preserved documentation: bulletins, materials, notes, news bulletins, reports, accounts of individual offices, and discusses its importance for the Polish authorities of those times.
