Abstract:

The paper is devoted to the classification of amber ornaments gathered during excavations in the Neolithic habitation sites of the eastern part of Latvia, mainly in Lubāna lowland, in 1963-1973. 14 forms of pendants, 16 forms of beads, as well as rings, disks and spacers of bead strings have been distinguished. Figurative pendants have been dealt with separately. The collection of amber ornaments gathered in the habitation sites of Lubāna lowland consists of 879 specimens belonging to the Middle Neolithic and 1373 specimens belonging to the Late Neolithic. The paper deals also with such problem as the dating and cultural belonging of the collection of Juodkrantė, peculiarities of amber plastic art in eastern, southern and western littoral of the Baltic. The role of Lubāna lowland centre of amber processing in the economic relations between the Neolithic tribes in eastern Europe is emphasized
