Abstract:

The application of aerial survey in archaeology has gone through a long development and has played an important role in archaeological field prospecting similarly as geophysical methods (magnetometry, geoelectrical etc.). With the increasing demand for complex information on the structure of settlements and for quick detection of sites suitable for detailed investigations and excavations a new way was found in the complex application of these methods at three stages: 1 - aerial survey tracing archaeological objects perceptible on the Earth’s surface, their locations in maps, photodocumentation, drawing approximate groundplans of selected sites; 2 - geophysical measurements aimed at a detection and delimitation of accumulations and concentrations of archaeological objects on a particular site and providing groundplans on a fixed scale; 3 - archaeological surface investigations and excavations at chosen sites, verification of the function, age and groundplans of the sites. This approach was verified by investigations of Middle Neolithic circular objects (roundels, woodhenges) near the villages of Vedrovice, the Znojmo county, Němčičky u Znojma, and Rašovice, the Vyškov county, where aerial survey, geophysical measurements, archaeological surface prospection, collection of material were carried out
