Abstract:
The studies comprising this small publication pertain, especially in the case of the first two texts, to material objects created due to human efforts: roads leading to rural parish churches and boundaries delineated in the course of dividing the landed estates of the nobility. Attention is focused predominantly on the people who built and used the objects in question, their attitudes, beliefs, visions and knowledge passed on from generation to generation. The third study concerns partly a mythological motif and partly beliefs and imagery relating to actual bridges. The analyses and reflections contained in the first two studies are derived, with certain exceptions, from Polish late mediaeval sources and the outcome of cartographic studies. The text on the “Slavonic bridge” used mainly material of East Slavonic origin. The author based himself to a wide extent on the results of older and more recent Russian ethnological, linguistic and historical works. He also took into account a much more extensive chronological range, including material collected and studied by ethnologists.
