Abstract:

Studies of the relationship the density of Collembola in a pine forest and the soil moisture of the habitat have shown: (1) a maximum Collembola density at average values of the plot moisture gradient, (2) a higher level of density during full growing season, (3) a higher maximum density during the warm season (June-September) on moister plots. Competitive relations were manifested by the occurrence of compensatory changes in the density of the selected groups of oligo- and polyvalent species under different habitat conditions. The density of oligovalent species appeared to depend to a considerable extent on moisture, that of polyvalent species – on the density of the oligovalent species. Among species with similar ecological reactions a tendency was found to avoid occurring together in the same territory.
