Abstract:

In experiments carried out in a natural habitat the Tubificidae that were attacked by fish and invertebrate predators were not usually eaten completely, but they only lost the posterior body part. Consequently, the effect observed was mainly a decrease in the average body weight and in the biomass of the Tubificidae, and to a lesser extent a reduction in their numbers. In the lakes of central and northern Poland, individuals were found whose bodies, having been dainaged by predators, were later on regenerating the parts lost. In the littoral, where their proportion was the largest, they represented up to 80% of all the Tubificidae. In laboratory investigations, the increase of the body during the regeneration of the parts lost was faster than during the normal growth. As a result, predation proved to be a factor stimulating the production of Tubificidae.
