Abstract:

The relationship has been determined between the specific rate of P and N excretion by plankton rotifers and crustaceans, and ambient temperature and individual body weights. The following equations describe these relationships: for P-PO4 excretion rate: Rotatoria Ep = 0.0154 W-1.27 e0.096T, Cladocera Ep = 0.519W-0.230 e0.039T, Copepoda Ep = 0.299 W-0.645 e0.039T; for N-NH4 excretion rate: Rotatoria EN = 0.0879 W-1.01 e0.088T, Cladocera EN = 1.80 W-0.191 e0.039T, Copepoda EN = 1.33 W-0.536 e0.039T, where Ep and EN denote the rate of P and N excretion, respectively, in μg · mg d. wt.-1 · h-1, W is the body weight in μg d. wt. and T is the temperature in C. Starvation was found to cause a 1.9-fold decrease in the phosphorus excretion rate, and a 2.2 -fold decrease in the nitrogen excretion rate.
