Abstract:

A case of hepatogenic encephalopathy due to liver cirrhosis following viral infection is described. Neuropathological picture closely resembled that being typical for Wilson’s disease. It consisted of bilateral necrosis in basal ganglia, proliferation and hypertrophy of astroglia, occur"rence of Alzheimer cells type I and II Opalski cells and vascular proliferation. Markedly enhanced copper level in the brain structures seems to be responsible for the development of morphological changes.
