Abstract:Root biomass and production in meadows of varying successional stages was analysed. The net production of root decreased along the successional age of the meadows. In two years old meadow the root biomass equalled that of the pennanent one. Along the age gradient a decreasing share of live roots and a accumulation of dead root matter were observed. A new ley was characterized by the most intensive turnover of root biomass. In the sequence of meadows from youngest to permanent one the decomposition of root mass slowed down.
