Abstract:

The brain glutaminase activity and serum ammonia content were determined in rats in which liver damage was produced by subcutaneous injections of car¬bon tetrachloride. The injections were performer every other day for 2, 4 and 6 months. The enzyme activity was observed to increase gradually ; it was not different from the control level after 2 months, but was elevated by 43 % after 4 months and about twice after 6 months. The serum ammonia content remained unchanged throughout. The results are indicative of an increase of ammonia level in the brain in this experimental model.
