Abstract:

Two cases of spinal cord defects belonging to the group known as dysraphia are described. In case I vascular malformations associated with the defect and affecting the morphological picture were found in an infant with spina bifida. Case II was a 56-year-old subject with a developmental disturbance of intermediate type between hydro-and syringomyelia, in which abnormal vessel formation was also found together with secondary degenerative changes and necroses in the nervous tissue. The authors call attention to the problem of the contribution of the connective tissue element, and particularly vessels, in the development of the changes associated with primary and secondary abnormal closure of the nerve tube, and their role in the evolution of pathological changes during postnatal life.
