Abstract:

This article examines the unusual history of mango fruit presented to Mao Zedong by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan during the Cultural Revolution. Mao sent the mango to the Worker-Peasant Mao Zedong Thought Propaganda Teams which were just pacifying the Qinghua University in Beijing. Through this gesture he supported workers in their competition with young Red Guards members. Mango, immortalized in numerous replicas, became a symbol of Mao thought and a true relic of the Communist China. This article analyses the mango cult and shows its traditional Chinese roots, such as mythological meaning of peach or the role of relics in Buddhism
