Abstract:

The author analyses the variability of the resistance of hibernating caterpillars of Euproctis chrysorrhoea L. to the action of low temperatures dming the period from December to May 1956/57. He establishes that:1) 'I'he caterpillars of the brown-tailed moth have the greatest resistance to the action of low temperatures during the diapause, the critical temperature during this period being to a considerable degree dependent on the temperatures previously prevailing. It is in fact a hardening process, and is undoubtedly of great ecological importance as a factor protecting the insects from death by freezing.2) The microtemperatrure in the nest of the brown-tailed moth is chiefly dependent on its structure.3) The resistance to the action of low temperatures characteristic of the diapausing caterpillars of the brown-tailed moth disappears when the caterpillars begin to feed.
