Drawing on the literary, epigraphic, iconographic and archaeological evidence he argues that at the beginning of the Imperial times the post of cornicularius was given to the bravest soldiers who earned the right to wear a horned helmet. In time, the habit disappeared and the term cornicularius was referred to the chief secretaries of the headquarters staff.
