Abstract:
The Transatlantic Radiotelegraph Central Transmitting Station in Babice, known as the Babice Radio Station, was the largest radiocommunication investment of the Second Polish Republic. It was used to maintain contact with other continents via radiotelegraphy and Morse code. Blown up by the Germans on January 16, 1945, it was completely forgotten during the period of the Polish People’s Republic. However, ruins of the facility have survived to this day in the Bemowo Forest. Drawing on archival research, an interview with an eyewitness, and the results of archaeological excavations, the authors attempt to answer the following question: are the above-ground remains of the Babice Radio Station its only surviving components? The outcome of the study indicates that the antenna counterpoise (its underground part) extends significantly beyond the area previously identified as occupied by the historic site
