 abstract={The article describes an experimental and clinical procedure necessary to acknowledge a synthetic chemical compound or natural product as an antitumor drug. A battery of basic tests, with their limitations, used for selection of active compounds and determination of their antitumor properties is presented. Particular steps of clinical investigation designed to let a drug to be used in cancer therapy are described Results of application of selected drugs are put together with data derived from epidemiology of cancer diseases.},
