Abstract:
The article discusses the latest book by Katarzyna Buczek entitled Rozmaite święta zawsze winnego uczczenia godne. Uroczystości szkolne w czasach Komisji Edukacji Narodowej (University of Warsaw Press, published in 2023). The book's author analyzes ceremonies and celebrations indicated by the Acts on the Commission of National Education, as well as ceremonies outside the Acts, that were important to school life and local communities. This review article serves as a commentary on the content of the book, which touches on the subject of public performances introduced to national and main schools reformed by the Commission of National Education. It focuses on students' performances in early modern physics, which, together with the experimental apparatus, was indicated for teaching by the Commission. The print entitled Popisy roczne szkół większych wydziału lubelskiego w przytomności nayiaśnieyszego trybunału koronnego i licznie zgromadzonych gości odprawione w lipcu 1781 (published in Lublin at unknown date) was used to portray the subject of the performances. It was quoted by Ms Buczek, but not discussed. When analyzing the knowledge of physics that was mandatory for students, attention was paid to the relevance of scientific issues and exercises in practical knowledge. These musings only act as a kind of digression and supplement to the book's content, which introduces the reader to the atmosphere and functioning of an eighteenth-century school during festivities through numerous quotes from the era. Ms Buczek's publication is scientific in nature, expanding our knowledge about schooling in the times of the Commission of National Education.
