Abstract:

The authorities of the Second Polish Republic treated Lithuanian education as a bargaining chip in international relations with Lithuania. It was used to force Lithuania to adopt the expected attitude towards the Polish minority in Lithuania. The Lithuanian state authorities in Kaunas treated the issue of Polish education in Lithuania in a similar way. For the Lithuanians, apart from the national issue understood as the preservation of Lithuanian identity and culture, the issue of Vilnius, which the Poles incorporated into their state, became crucial. Lithuanian education in Poland became a tool in the tug of war for the attitudes of the Lithuanian minority towards the dispute over Vilnius. The political agitation of Lithuanian parties was directed against Lithuanian state schools, which were openly boycotted. The Lithuanians sought to strengthen Lithuanian private education, while the Polish authorities tried to limit and control it.
