Two days earlier, on 11 November 1918, his statement as Emperor Charles I renouncing his imperial power in Austria was published in Vienna. From March 1919 to October 1921, Charles I and his family lived in exile in Switzerland, plot-ting his return to the throne. He made two attempts to return in 1921 but was thwarted by Miklós Horthy and the Hungarian National Assembly.
