Both periods of Russian policy towards its multi-ethnic peripheries faced a common challenge: addressing the legacy of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, which was dismantled at the end of the eighteenth century. The Polish question, oft en referred to in Russia as the ʻfatal affairʼ, emerged from this ʻaft erlifeʼ of the Commonwealth – as a complex set of issues stemming from the Polesʼ desire to preserve their identity and reclaim their sovereignty. The source studies included in this volume are based on extensive research conducted in post-Soviet archives since their opening in the early 1990s. They demonstrate the debates among the Russian and Soviet imperial elites and outline the policies implemented towards the Poles and the Polish question.}, type={Text}, title={"Co zrobić z Polską?" : sprawa polska w ideologiach i strategiach imperium rosyjskiego i sowieckiego wobec peryferii (od Mikołaja I do Stalina)}, URL={http://rcin.org.pl/ihpan/Content/246290/WA303_282618_II3890_Glebocki.pdf}, keywords={political ideas - Russia - 19th c., political ideas - Russia - 20th c., Poland - relations - Russia - history, Russia - relations - Poland - history, Soviet Union - relations - Poland, Poles abroad, minorities - government policy - Soviet Union, Polish question (1795-1918), imperialism - Russia - history, nationalism, Slavophilism - Russia - history, Russification - Former Polish Eastern Territories}, }
