Based on the sources and literature on the subject, it presents Bathory’s health ailments during his reign in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and their impact on the king himself and his immediate environment. It also mentions the ruler’s afflictions he suffered while still in Transylvania. In addition, the team of court physicians and surgeons is characterised to emphasise the relationship between Bathory’s health and their role at the royal court. Moreover, the article presents in detail the last days of King Stephen’s life, with comprehensive information on his ailments and the medicines he was administered. The participation of the two most prominent royal medics, Niccolò Bucella and Simon Simonius, in treating the dying Bathory is described, presenting their diagnoses and methods and means of treatment.
