The book presents the process of shaping and developing of Prussia together with changes in its various areas of everyday life in three chronological parts. They reflect the civilizational development of the Polish western neighbour during, first, the existence of the estate and feudal society; then, during the capitalist changes of the nineteenth century, and finally as a part of the German Empire during the time of industrialisation and accelerated growth at the end of the nineteenth century.
