Abstract:

The article presents a picture of selected social issues emerging from reading letters from citizens of People’s Poland from 1951–1980, found in the files of the Office of Letters and Inspections of the Central Committee of PZPR, the Office of Complaints and Letters of the Office of the Council of Ministers and the Committee of Letters of the Committee for Radio and Television “Polish Radio and Television” (until 1960 the Committee for Radio Broadcasting “Polskie Radio”). The correspondence regarding rural old age, health care, construction and poverty was analyzed in detail. “Black” picture of the problems resulted from the letters of the correspondence: the sender wrote, to cause the sympathy and intervention on the part of recipients of letters. On the other hand, they knew that fantasizing about their difficult situation could discredit them in the eyes of those who intervened in their affairs. Writing to power was therefore an activity requiring skill dosing arguments.
