Abstract:

This book explores the ideological and political dimensions of the Russian and Soviet empiresʼ struggles with the Polish question, encompassing both its ʻwhiteʼ and ʻredʼ forms, up until the first half of the twentieth century. Both periods of Russian policy towards its multi-ethnic peripheries faced a common challenge: addressing the legacy of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, which was dismantled at the end of the eighteenth century. The Polish question, oft en referred to in Russia as the ʻfatal affairʼ, emerged from this ʻaft erlifeʼ of the Commonwealth – as a complex set of issues stemming from the Polesʼ desire to preserve their identity and reclaim their sovereignty. The source studies included in this volume are based on extensive research conducted in post-Soviet archives since their opening in the early 1990s. They demonstrate the debates among the Russian and Soviet imperial elites and outline the policies implemented towards the Poles and the Polish question.
