Abstract:

As a consequence of the defeat suffered in the First World War, the last king of the Kingdom of Hungary, Charles IV of Austria, had to submit a written declaration of abdication on 13 November 1918. Two days earlier, on 11 November 1918, his statement as Emperor Charles I renouncing his imperial power in Austria was published in Vienna. From March 1919 to October 1921, Charles I and his family lived in exile in Switzerland, plot-ting his return to the throne. He made two attempts to return in 1921 but was thwarted by Miklós Horthy and the Hungarian National Assembly. They decided to dethrone Charles IV and declared the eighteenth-century resolution that entitled the Habsburgs to the Hungarian throne to be null and void.
