Niniejszy artykuł ma na celu wysunięcie hipotezy wyjaśniającej, dlaczego niewolnicy Herulów w bitwie walczyli bez tarcz, a także z jakiego powodu główną taktyką bitewną tego ludu był brawurowy, frontalny atak. Posiłkując się relacjami dotyczącymi bitew toczonych przez Herulów oraz materiałem porównawczym dotyczącym m.in. dwóch innych grup „nagich wojowników”, wskazujemy, że w działaniach herulskich wojowników uwidaczniają się działania silnie zrytualizowane nacelowane na pozyskanie zwycięstwa w bitwie. Artykuł ten porusza kilka wątków związanych ze sprawami militarnymi we wczesnym średniowieczu.
