In December 1948, the Belgian magazine 'La Libre Belgique' published a report by Robert Demarcelle, ‘L’ex-colonel Kiewitz’. He reconstructed the activities of Colonel Werner Kiewitz, a native of Wrocław, in occupied Belgium. He was an active participant in the anti-Nazi resistance movement. Owing to his position and close contacts with King Leopold III, he actively mitigated the effects of terror and saved members of Belgian society. Although his role long remained underestimated, recent archival research has confi rmed the crucial importance of his actions in ensuring a milder course of the German occupation in Belgium.
