Abstract:The article is an attempt to answer the question about the importance of literary text in historical research. The starting point is the thesis formulated as early as in 1934 by the Polish sociologist, Florian Znaniecki, that “a number of sociological problems has been already brought up and many will be brought up by literary works”, since it is a literature that often notices “facts which are neglected and ignored by the theoretician following his doctrine”. The author of the present article argues that the questions posed by Znaniecki, and at present taken up by “everyday life sociology”, are worth to be referred also to the recent history of Poland. The article discusses such issues as: the relation between “art” and “truth”, “realism” in literature, the significance of 1956 in the history of Polish literature, debates of historians about the use of literary texts as historical source, methodological proposals of Georg Simmel, Erving Goffman, Piotr Sztompka, new research schools (such as literary anthropology). The second part of the article present an analysis of the short story by Marek Nowakowski entitled ‘Benek Kwiaciarz’ (‘Benek the Flower Peddler’). The article concludes with the thesis that the writings of Marek Nowakowski, one of the most important writers of the so-called ’56 generation could turn out to be of special relevance to the realisation of research postulates put forward once by Florian Znaniecki and now by “everyday life sociology”.
