Abstrakt:

The authors try to answer the question how the post-1945 Communist government in Poland usedproper names to create socialist reality and which values fundamental to this political system thosenames evoked. In this research the authors presented toponyms of Łódź i.e. names of streets, squares,and institutions such as cinemas and factories. Many of the names appealed to official values, mythsand heroes. They played an educational and ideological role and at the same time constituted a universaland ideological type of narration which was in force in all socialist countries. On the other hand, namesevoking the world of classical culture, bourgeois and capitalist values were removed.
