Clinical, anatomical and histological diagnosis
Histological diagnosis: Encephalomacia inveterate. Autopsy examination of 79-year-old patient was performed. Neuropathological evaluation in light microscopy was based on brain paraffin sections stained with H-E, Cresyl violet and Van Gieson's method. The analyzed specimens revealed an old focus of encephalomalacia involving the white matter of the frontal lobe and partially the basal nuclei. Spongiosis of the frontal lobe cortex and the insula was seen. Diffuse gliosis of the white matter of the preserved cerebral hemisphere and cerebellum was found. Extensive fibrosis in arteries of all sizes was observed.Histological diagnosis: Focus encephalomalaciae inveteratae lobi frontalis et nucleorum basalium dextrorum. Status spongiosus lubi frontalis et insulae. Arterio et arteriolosclerosis gradu mediocri.
