Clinical, anatomical and histological diagnosis
Histological diagnosis: encephalomacia recens trunci eerebri. Autopsy examination of 55-year-old patient was performed. Neuropathological evaluation in light microscopy was based on brain paraffin sections stained with H-E, Cresyl violet and Van Gieson's method. A focus of early necrosis was visible in the bridge. Brain tissue in this area showed poorer staining, was loosened, and spongy in places. The cells of the nucleus accumbens were ischemically altered, some were steatotic. A large accumulation of lipofuscin was seen in the olivary cells and dentate nucleus. Vascular endothelium was relaxed and vessels were maximally filled with blood. Unilaterally, small hemangiomas were observed in the inferior olive region. In the globus pallidus unilaterally (asymmetrical section), a large accumulation of pseudocalcium salts was seen, lying loosely in the tissue, on capillaries and nerve cells. Larger vessels had a completely or partially calcified wall.In the cerebellum, some Purkinje cells showed features of homogenization.Histological diagnosis: Encephalomalacia recens trunci cerebri. Calcificationea in reg. globi pallidi.
