Description:

Clinical, anatomical and histological diagnosis

Abstract:

Histological diagnosis: Encephalomacia recens. Status lacunaris. Oedema et hyperaemia cerebri. Arteriosclerosis. Autopsy examination of 74-year-old patient was performed. Neuropathological evaluation in light microscopy was based on brain paraffin sections stained with Hematoxylin-eosin and van Gieson method.A foci of malacia involving the cortex and white matter was found in the left parietal lobe. In the border of the focus around some vessels in the meninges and in the brain, symptomatic inflammatory reaction, perivascular necrosis, cell loss, ischemic type diseases and fatty degeneration were seen. Amyloid bodies were observed in the fine layer in some areas. Numerous perivascular cavities and foci of malacia were seen in the basal ganglia, mainly in the putamen, extrema and internal capsule. Throughout the CNS, the tissue structure was , loosened and locally spongy characterized by weaker pigmentation. Prominent glial activation was observed, with isomorphic gliosis in areas. All vessels were maximally filled with blood. Large fibrous and vitreous atherosclerotic lesions were noted.
