Abstract:Histological diagnosis: Maple Syrup Urine Disease (MSUD). Autopsy examination of 3-month-old baby was performed. Neuropathological evaluation in light microscopy was based on brain paraffin sections stained by Hematoxylin-eosin and Cresyl violet stain as well as Kluver-Barrera and Kanzler-Arendt methods. Additionally, frozen section was stained by Sudan III.Very weak coloring in staining for myelin was noticed in all sections of the white matter. Partial myelination was seen in the short tracts of the basal ganglia, in the axis of some convolutions of the cerebral hemispheres and in the cerebellar hemispheres. In poorly myelinated areas a tissue spongiosis was observed. Impaired myelination was accompanied by fibrous gliosis, more pronounced in structures with severe spongiosis and in their close vicinity. In Sudan III staining, small fat droplets around glial nuclei were seen in some areas, e.g. in the optic tract and partially in the cerebellar pathways, with a surprisingly small number of fat droplets around the vessels. In other non-myelinated areas Sudan III staining was negative
