Abstract:Histological diagnosis: Encephalomalacia inveterata hemisph. dextra. Status lacunaris. Senilitas. Autopsy examination of 82-year-old patient was performed. Neuropathological evaluation in light microscopy was based on brain paraffin sections stained with orcein, Holzer, Heidenhain, Perdrau, Nissl and Bielschowsky's method. In the basal ganglia of the right hemisphere, an elongated old post-malacia cavity was visible. Surrounding the cavity was scar tissue, very abundant gemistiocytes, and remnants of hemosiderin-filled macrophages. The thalamus revealed typical status lacunaris. Desolation was observed in the cortex, especially in layers III and V. Biechowski's staining revealed very numerous, well-saturated senile patches in all areas. The vessels showed grade II atherosclerotic changes, most severe in the basal ganglia and white matter of the hemispheres.
