Description:

Clinical, anatomical and histological diagnosis

Abstract:

Histological diagnosis: Hydrocephalus in the course of toxoplasmosis.Autopsy examination of 10-days-old infant was performed. Neuropathological evaluation in light microscopy was based on brain paraffin sections stained with Hematoxylin-eosin, cresyl-violet, Heidenhain and Kluver method. The cerebellar and brainstem structures were normal. The nuclei of the basal ganglia were deformed and covered with a thick layer of subcortical glia. The temporal and occipital cortex were fairly well formed with minor secondary cellular changes. The remaining part of the pallium was a bladder, whose thin wall was composed of glial tissue covered with mesodermal fibers. The inner surface of the bladder also had a glial-mesodermal structure and corresponded to a layer of subependymal glia. Lymphocytic-macrophage inflammatory infiltrates were seen in the stem meninges. Numerous calcified formations corresponding to terminal colonies of toxoplasmas were found in the supra- and subependymal glia.
