Description:

Clinical, anatomical and histological diagnosis

Abstract:

Histological diagnosis: Encephalopathia toxica.Autopsy examination of 6-month-old patient was performed. Neuropathological evaluation in light microscopy was based on brain paraffin sections stained with Hematoxylin-eosin and Heidenhain method. The brain showed no inflammatory features. The cortex was characterized by mediocre cell loss, predominantly in layers III and V, more intense in frontal areas, and endothelial stimulation of cortical vessels. There were quite marked signs of edema in the white matter; in the form of dilated vascular spaces and expanded interlobular oligodendroglial systems. A characteristic feature of the case was the presence of a small number of large progressive astrocytic cells. In addition, small clusters of fibroblasts and endothelial cells were seen perivascularly in the meninges. The picture is consistent with generalized toxemia - similar are seen in the course of "extra-renal" uremia, and occasionally in hepatic comas.
