That paper reported the results of observations and experiments devoted to rescue behaviour displayed by workers of three ant species (Formica sanguinea, F. fusca and F. cinerea) in response to ants captured by antlion larvae. The authors discussed the possible role of ecological factors (such as territorialism / submissiveness of particular ant species) and of chemical and vibrational signals emitted by the victims (in particular their mandibular secretions) in the mediation of the expression of ant rescue behaviour. They also reported observations of pulling of the victim’s antenna by workers of F. sanguinea and F. cinerea, a behaviour pattern that was subsequently found to be absent in repertories of rescue behaviour patterns of two other formicine ant species. Further research also revealed that rescue of homospecific nestmates that was absent in workers of F. fusca in the context of antlion larva capture bioassays is, however, well expressed during artificial snare bioassays. The discussed paper contributed in an important way to the renewal of the interest of researchers in animal rescue behaviour.}, title={Current advances in the research on ant rescue behaviour inspired by findings and hypotheses of Wojciech Czechowski and his coworkers}, type={Text}, URL={http://rcin.org.pl/miiz/Content/263324/WA058_300408_P256_FF.pdf}, keywords={altruism, rescue behaviour, prosocial behaviour, ants, Formicidae}, }
