Description:

A group photo depicts eight men in uniforms and caps holding weapons on their shoulders. In the background there are tents pitched in a forest. The inscription at the back of the photo says [with some typos]: “A memento from the camp in Maniewicze, dated 15 August 1938, a competition of the CKM [HMG = heavy machine gun] company. Camp Maniewicze. (…) Paweł.” On the left side there is the following annotation: “Chosen to participate in the competition, the 8 of us, we took 3rd place”. The annotation on the right side says: “For the entire company.” An annotation made in a different handwriting says: “Used to live in Wielącza near Zamość, Michał’s brother” ; 15 August 1938, Maniewicze (Volyn Oblast [region], to-day Ukraine) ; The photo sent to the contest named “Photography of the Polish village pre-1948” organized in 1983 by the quarterly “Fotografia” (Photography) and the weekly “Nowa Wieś” (New village). Copy of the photo kept at the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnology of the Polish Academy of Sciences (former Institute for the History of Material Culture)
