Type II epithelial cells do not belong to the morphological components of the alveolar epithelial lining that form the diffusion barrier. Type II cells contain characteristic secretory structures called lamellar bodies (Figs. 7, 8). These structures consist of multilayered lamellae, arranged in parallel.
