Abstrakt:

Jan Hus was an extraordinary, fiery preacher and reformer. His preaching stemmed not only from his theological training, that which was central to the 'ars praedicandi', but first of all from his deliberate choice to use the pulpit as an instrument of catechization and the promotion of reforms. Hus’s activities fit well into the process of ennobling preaching that started in the pre-Hussite period and gave new impulse to the new application of pastoral instruments that followed the Fourth Lateran Council in 1215. The author argues that only in the Bohemian Reformation did the development of preaching take such a visible, ideologically motivated form. Examining Hus’s preaching activities and studying in particular three collections of sermons: 'Česká nedělní postilla', 'Sermones in capella Bethlehem' and 'Česká sváteční kázání' he shows Hus as a preacher, propagator and dedicated promoter of preaching. Hus’s teaching by preaching amounts to a great apologetics of the ars praedicandi; he incessantly demands diligence, ardor and moral reliability from a preacher. At the same time, Hus condemns negligence, silence, restrain, temperance, greed and pride which – in his opinion and in accordance with orthodoxy – violate the preacher’s mission and bring harm to the faithful.
