Abstract:
Izabela Mrzygłód's work Universities in the shadow of crisis: the nationalist radicalization of students in Warsaw and Vienna in the interwar period offers a comprehensive and thorough comparative analysis of the radicalization process among nationalistminded students studying at the University of Warsaw and the University of Vienna during the interwar period. The author demonstrates that manifestations of right-wing radicalization such as xenophobia, antisemitism, and the drive to exclude those deemed outsiders constituted one of the main forms of response to crises at both universities. The book examines the discourses, cognitive patterns, and shared belief systems within student self-help organizations that gave rise to violence and terror among students at both institutions. Special attention is given to the self-help organizations: the Bratnia Pomoc (Brotherly Aid Society of University of Warsaw Students) and the Deutsche Studentenschaft (German Student Union), which served as organizational platforms for far-right initiatives.
