Description:

The photo depicts a group of people dressed in costumes in a room with a bread oven. On the left side of the photo there is a man with a long white beard and a hat on his head; next to him there is a man dressed as “turoń” - a Christmas caroller in the costume of a horned beast; next, there is a man in a hat whose face is covered in paint. Another person has his or her face painted black, and has a headscarf on his/her head and a blanket wrapped around arms. Yet another caroller is wearing a fur hat, is holding a basin and is kneeling next to the “turoń”. There is a bread oven in the background. On the back of the photo there is the following inscription: "People dressed in costumes with “turoń” during Christmas. Podgrodzie 1946" ; Winter 1946, Podegrodzie, district Nowosądecki ; The photo sent to the contest named “Photography of the Polish village pre-1948” organized in 1983 by the quarterly “Fotografia” (Photography) and the weekly “Nowa Wieś” (New village).
