Autorzy dysponowali 30 kośćcami żubra (18 samic i 12 samców) oraz 2 kośćcami bydła watussi (samiec i samica). Zwierzęta te były różnego wieku i pochodziły z polskich rezerwatów i ogrodu zoologicznego w Warszawie. Obserwacjom, a następnie pomiarom poddano czaszki i wyrostki kolczyste najwyzszych kręgów piersiowych. Czaszki były także ważone.
