Studies from various laboratories have shown that cytokines may play an important role in ischemic brain injury. Particular interest revolves around the role of the two interleukins: interleukin -lbeta (IL-1 beta) and interleukin-6. Although these pleiotropic cytokines have been described as having both pro- and anti-inflammatory properties, IL-lbeta has been mainly postulated as a mediator in the pathogenesis of ischemic damage, while IL-6 appears mostly involved in the neuroprotective action. The balance between the opposing actions of these two cytokines may be an important element in determining the outcome after ischemic insult.
