Description:

Clinical, anatomical and histological diagnosis

Abstract:

Histological diagnosis: Microcephalia in oasu cum microcrania. Vitia gyrifi cationis et laesiones cellulares dispersae. Autopsy examination of 8-month-old patient was performed. Neuropathological evaluation in light microscopy was based on brain paraffin sections stained with Hematoxylin-eosin, cresyl-violet and Heidenhain method.Slight disturbances of the ganglia structures were visible in the specimens from the hemispheres. The remaining gyri were generally narrow. The stratification of the cortex was normal. Only the temporal pole showed an undeveloped cortex with clusters of young, undifferentiated cells. In addition to these conformational abnormalities, the damage was found in the cortex: old in the form of layered cell prolapse especially in layer III, very significant in the ammonal cortex; more recent was present in the form of damage to individual neurons. In the brainstem, good neuronal preservation in some nuclei and cellular thinning in other groupings was visible. Altogether, the set of observed changes presented a picture of a brain that was developing in craniostenosis, already noticeable from the last period of pregnancy (7-8 months), causing discrete disorders of the final phases of avian pallitum formation and subsequent damage to maturing structures.
