Description:

Clinical, anatomical and histological diagnosis

Abstract:

Histological diagnosis: Malacia intraspinalis vasculogenes. Angioma intraspinale.Autopsy examination of 66-year-old patient was performed. Neuropathological evaluation in light microscopy was based on brain paraffin sections stained with Hematoxylin-eosin and van Gieson. There was no obvious neoplastic tissue found on any of the specimens taken. In the field of the overgrown central canal there was a clump of stimulated astrocytic cells, which looked like a subependymal hyperplastic glioma. However, it was quite clearly demarcated from the surrounding area. At some distance from this field of gliosis, there was a conglomerate of highly sclerotized vessels lying in the lacuna of the tissue and having the character of a small nodular hemangioma. At the thoracic levels, the tissue was undergoing reactionless dissolution. All structural elements were obliterated except for an enormous number of vitreous and fibrous vessels, often with lumen obliterated or closed by thrombus. A rather abundant lymphocytic infiltrate was seen at some of the vessels described. No cellular elements were visible at the neurotically altered areas.
