Abstract:

The authors have studied the dependence of glycogen accumulation following moderate ischemia, on the degree of maturity of the central nervous system. The studies were performed on rats of both sexes, which in the age of 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6 weeks were subjected to bilateral ligation of the common carotid arteries. The animals were sacrificed after 6, 12, 24, 48 and 120 hrs following operation. The glycogen content in brain was assayed with biochemical methods and its tissue —and intracellular localization determined by means of histochemical and electron--microscopic examinations. These studies were supplemented with the histological estimation of the degree of tissue impairment. The animals subjected exclusively to anesthesia or sham operation and those not subjected to any operation constituted the control material.
