Abstract:

This study deals with the unpublished 'quaestio' by Jakoubek of Stříbro that asks whether every Christian is obliged to approve every decision of any council under the pain of excommunication. Alongside Jakoubek’s sermon 'Soliciti sitis' of 1410 this 'quaestio' remains a major component of his ecclesiology. The author carefully analyzes the elements of Jakoubek’s position and identifies key sources behind his concepts, namely the works of Matthew of Janov, John Wyclif and Pseudo-Chrysostomus. It also reveals that to support his arguments Jakoubek drew heavily on the works of ecclesiastical historiography such as the world chronicle 'Flores temporum'. The 'quaestio' is preserved in a single manuscript and its text is followed by extracts from Gratian’s 'Decretum' and a shorter commentary on the councils. The author discusses the possible relations between these two texts and Jakoubek’s position and his thought. He attempts to establish the date of the 'quaestio' and determine its historical context. The work has usually been dated to 1415, but the author demonstrates that it might have been produced as late as 1417. Finally, he points to John Rokycana’s reception of the 'quaestio' at the Council of Basel in 1433 during his debate with John of Ragusa, and argues, that Jakoubek’s ecclesiology was still normative in this extraordinary situation.
